Directorate of Information Technology
With the generous assistance of DANIDA, the Danish Government’s development agency, assistance was provided for a programme of total computerization of MSD.
An intensive effort of over one and half years culminated in a modern electronically based system of overall information sharing involving every aspect of the department’s operations, from orders to deliveries, with critical focus on expiry date controls and inventory management among them. This system provides a firm foundation of Information Technology that remains flexible to accommodate future needs for programme expansion or addition.
The Management Information System (MIS) will provide the core for the Ministry of Health’s future Logistical Management Information System responsible for the better forecasting and management of the nations health care requirements generated in the field among the dispensaries and health centers.
Medical Stores Department, an autonomous department of the Ministry of Health is responsible for the procurement, storage and distribution of all medical goods and equipment throughout the nation. Much of the general public are unaware of the operations and services of MSD which was created 1993 by an act of Parliament and had previously being acting as the Centre Medical Stores.
The Department is presently undergoing an extensive restructure and refocus to concentrate on the critical demands of its operations, customer service and order fulfilment. The numerous changes, at all levels, from central offices in Dar es Salaam to the Zonal stores throughout the country, will benefit over 4000 of our customers and the Tanzanian population in providing health products. True to its policy of transparency and communications, MSD offers this review to the public as well as our colleagues and remains open to any and all constructive commentary
